William Gouge (1575-1653) was an English preacher at St Ann Blackfriars as well as a member of the Westminster Assembly. He published this work in 1622 focusing on relationships between husband, wife, parents, children, masters, and servants.

The best book on Marriage

Really a first-rate book. My (now) wife and I went through this book when we were courting and it provided a perfect means of bringing up subjects and discussing it, because Gouge doesn't skip over anything! The first section is entirely an exposition of the passage in Ephesians regarding the household. Then there is a section on mutual duties of marriage, and finally it gets into husbands, wives, and children.
I read countless other marriage books which all went along the lines of "communicate, be nice to each other, compliment each other (and "complement" each other) etc. I wanted something deeper, they all seemed too shallow. Well, Gouge, like any puritan, just bleeds Scripture. If you as a husband want to be convicted on what it means to love your wife "as Christ loved the church" then this will certainly do the job! If you as a wife want to be convicted on what it means to submit and honour your husband, this too is expounded at length. The beautiful thing is, a submissive wife makes it easy for her husband to love and _cherish_ her, and a a loving and cherishing husband makes it easy for a wife to submit to his leading.
There are a few things I disagree with (issues in his day mainly, like class structure), but overall it is spot on. It covers a huge variety of issues, from finances, wills, children from past marriages, etc. to even whether to breastfeed your children or not. As I said, this was extremely helpful to my wife and I as we were courting, as we could bring up sometimes sensitive issues and discuss them.
This particular version does have OCR errors, but they aren't bad. The language has been updated somewhat to remove the "thee" and "thou" and it usually works quite well. I wish it had a better table of contents and Scripture references and such but I can live with it. It is a very, very simple Kindle book. However, a highly recommended book for an older married couple, a younger married couple, or a couple thinking about marriage! The section on servants was also very convicting to me as I try to please my supervisor at my job. This is definitely in my top 5 of must-read Christian books and something I recommend to everyone.

I thank God for this book!

I was a feminist in college, but the Lord saved me 21 years ago and has been conforming me more and more to his image. This book was like no other besides the bible in making things practical for me. The language may be difficult, if you are not use to reading older, Puritan type literature. I have to say that I have only read the part of the book that relates to wives. I found it like no other book I have ever read. If the language is too difficult for you, Reformation Heritage is updating this book with three different books. The first one is already out and called Building a Godly Home volume 1. Hope this helps.

This author wrote many years ago, but his thoughts and direction for Christians are just as lively and challenging today as when it was written. Be ready to be challenged in your Christian walk by this book.
