A much-needed text
By RPA
I have been teaching Chinese to high school students for over 25 years and have used a variety of texts. I decided to try "Basic Spoken Chinese" (BSC) with one of my classes on an experimental level, and I have to say it is the best text of its kind that I have ever seen. In the first place, separating the speaking/listening components from the reading/writing components enables students to make rapid progress in oral/aural skills without the limitations imposed by time taken in character mastery. The language used is colloquial and authentic, arranged topically with each unit building upon the previous ones. The ancillary materials are both abundant and exceptional in quality, providing multiple venues for drill (listening comprehension, pronunciation, substitution, role playing, translation, etc.). The audio components (included on CDs that come with the text) are excellent. The companion volume, "Basic Written Chinese", will be available early next year, and I am anxious to see this and incorporate a writing component into the class. If it's as good as BSC, this textbook will set a new standard for Chinese instruction.
It should be noted that BSC and BWC are intended primarily to be used as college texts. However, this should NOT deter Chinese instructors at the secondary level from considering adopting them. In the final analysis, the difference simply comes down to pace. The lesson plans which accompany the text can easily be modified for high school classes, or the teacher can prepare his own lesson plans, as I do. The material is appropriate for any level provided that the instructor adjust the pace at which new material is introduced and the time devoted to any given unit.
Another impressive feature to BSC is the amount of relevant (and interesting!) culture information introduced in the "Grammar and Culture" segment of each part of the units. The explanations and insights far surpass anything I have seen in other texts, not excluding such classics as the "Integrated Chinese" series. If the teacher is so inclined, entire class periods can be devoted to discussions of these culture points. My students actually enjoy reading them. In a China (PRC) which is changing almost daily, the cultural insights offer marvelous opportunities to discuss Chinese culture in the context of the language being studied at the moment. The wealth of information offered in a very reader-friendly manner is breath-taking and makes the cultural component of the course fall into place naturally.
If I were to voice any complaint---and it is a very minor one---I could have wished that the video component were of better quality. While it does allow the instructor to choose what he wants his students to see (characters, pinyin, English, or nothing but the actual video), the voices are actually dubbed over the real voices of the speakers. Though I understand that this guarantees phonetic accuracy, it impinges upon the real-life feel of the video. However, this point pales to insignificance given the quality of the text as a whole and should under no circumstances be a deterrent to adopting this text.
BSC will work very well with independent learners, a point which Dr. Kubler addresses in the Instructor's Manual.
In short, I believe Dr. Kubler's text is truly ground-breaking, marking a new standard for spoken Chinese instruction. I am very anxious to see "Basic Written Chinese" when it appears. For those teachers (especially at the secondary level) who have lived with the frustration of students' oral proficiency progressing only as fast as they can master the written characters, BSC is a breath of fresh air even in a time where new Chinese texts appear almost daily. Most importantly, the students themselves are motivated by making rapid progress in the two most important skills of speaking and listening comprehension. It is my sincere hope that this text achieves the recognition (and adoption) which it deserves.

Great for college use and for those wanting to learn Mandarin and devote the time to it. Highly recommended!
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
As a person who has the habit of learning multiple foreign languages, learning Chinese has been a fascinating experience. Having watched and reviewed many Hong Kong films, at the time, I was learning Cantonese. But when my brother married a Chinese woman and I started to learn more about the Chinese culture through their family and friends, I realized the importance of learning Mandarin over Cantonese.
Suffice to say, of the languages I have learned or attempted to learn, Mandarin is quite challenging, requires time and patience but also if you have it available for you, a conversational partner to help you with pronunciation.
But having gone through several books, I was very interested in checking out Cornelius C. Kubler's "Basic Spoken Chinese: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners". I knew earlier on that the book was to be used as a textbook, but having learned several languages in college, I figured, that not having taken a Chinese language class, perhaps learning "basic spoken Chinese" why not challenge myself.
First, it's important to mention that this is not a book where one who is planning to go to China in the next few months, can read and learn immediately. Mandarin is not an easy language to learn. But with that being said, the book does help one learn Chinese pronunciation, grammar, usage, and culture. And fortunately, you get a DVD with video and another disc with MP3's. So, you get 6-hours of audio.
NOTE: One disc requires you to click on start.htm and it will be opened by your browser and showcase flash video. The other disc is the MP3's, which you can use other audio programs.
Going through this book, I will discuss the positives. As an educator, Cornelius C. Kubler has done an amazing job with this book. The way this book is structured, is almost similar to how my other books that I have studied in college were structured by learning introductions, greetings, numbers and for one to get around in Beijing.
So, in a college setting, this book is excellent for basic Chinese.
But since I'm not taking a class in Chinese and using this book on my own, there were some challenges.
The book begins with Pronunciation Exercises and this is important to know as pronunciation is not exactly the same as we would pronounce things in English. For example, "ZH" is like the J in Jerk or Joke. On the book it shows that there is a pronunciation exercise listed as A-1 and A-57 and similar to when you are in a foreign language class, you can hear the teacher pronounce the words and you can repeat them.
UPDATE: At first I thought there were no pronunciation exercises included with this book but it is located on the MP3 disc beginning with PE_A.
But the book covers the following units:
UNIT 1: Greetings and Useful Phrases
UNIT 2: Introductions
UNIT 3: Numbers, Dates, Times and Money
UNIT 4: Numbers, Dates, Time and Money
UNIT 5: Locating Persons, Places and Things
UNIT 6: Biographical Information
UNIT 7: Biographical Information
UNIT 8: Getting Around Beijing
UNIT 9: Getting Around Beijing
UNIT 10: Weather
JUDGMENT CALL:
As a person who is not taking a Mandarin class but have learned different languages through college and by software/books, I emphasize that this book is not for one who needs to know Chinese within weeks or a few months. Mandarin is not a easy language to learn but I honestly feel that "Basic Spoken Chinese: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners" is well-written and does feature very good basic lessons.
But as this book is intended for the classroom setting and the fact that it comes with two discs that cover the unit chapters, I am so glad to find out that the pronunciation exercises were included on the MP3 disc.
After going through these chapters now for two months, I honestly feel that Cornelius C. Kubler did an amazing job with this book. Of many books on the Chinese languages that I have learned, I really enjoyed and prefer this type of structure that he features in this book. He does a good job in covering the basics with so much efficacy and I think educators who are considering text for teaching Chinese in high school or college will probably feel this book is right for their students.
Again, this book may be slightly challenging for those who never learned a language or needing to learn Mandarin in a quick amount of time. This is the kind of book you want to learn gradually over time and practice each chapter continuously until you feel confident to move on to the next unit.
With that being said, I highly recommend "Basic Spoken Chinese"!

Probably Adequate for Travel-to-China Preparation
By E. M. Griffith
My son took Mandarin in college, so I had him look over this introductory set both as comparison and for his overall input. If you're planning a short trip to China (2 weeks or so), and the emphasis you're looking for is being able to speak the language enough to get by, then "Basic Spoken Chinese: And Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners" is certainly adequate. If, on the other hand, your job or plans involve more extensive travel to China or interation with Chinese peers, you'll need a much more in depth program. The emphasis is entirely on speaking; you won't learn to read or write with this set, and it's also very rudementary--the conversations covered handle several everyday situations.
"Basic Spoken Chinese: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners" has three parts as described below by my son.
Part One - Book
Shows only the conversations, words and definitions.
A little discussion of Chinese culture, but not much.
No practice exercises.
Part Two - Audio CD
Hear and repeat words in phrases for practice.
Builds from a few individual words to a phrase using the words, then on to a sentence using the phrase.
Uses native speakers.
Part Three - Computer Program DVD
Includes videos of the conversations in the book/audio CD.
Can choose to have subtitles of pinyin phonetic pronunciations, Chinese charatcers (both simplified and traditional) or English.
Program appeared very buggy on a 3 year old laptop; videos wobbled at first, some buttons didn't work.
In conclusion, the first two parts of the set would probably be adequate for someone preparing a short visit in China; the third part might be useful, depending on your computer? The program would not in any way replace a beginner course in Mandarin, so if your needs require more in depth study of the language, you'll want to keep shopping.
