Beautiful paintings and informative techniques.

Book Review- Experimental Landscapes in Watercolour by Anne Blockley
This book contains the artist’s interpretation of landscapes into watercolor paintings. She used techniques included water based paint and acrylic inks. Her paintings are based a lot on the English Cotswolds which is an area of woodlands, fields, hills and hedges.
She includes how to explanations with pictures of the effects. She does a great job with these explanations and the descriptions of each painting that she includes. She provides details for the techniques she uses also. The techniques she uses to obtain different looks are numerous. In one painting she uses fern leaves. For other paintings she used different types of salt to add a speckling effect. In others she explained how to use plastic wrap for a unique effect in the texture and for depth. It was a fascinating book and it was full of beautiful paintings.
I favor landscape paintings. I loved her painting titled “Autumn Magic”. The colors she used were a beautiful combination. I also liked the painting “In your Dreams” which was a great example of the combined elements she used. However my favorite paintings were the ones of the ocean.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to look at beautiful pictures and wants to know how to paint them. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Excellent, and innovative

The author introduces her techniques very clearly, and through a series of extraordinary and very skillful paintings illustrates their application. This has changed my painting, I now regard watercolor paintings without textures as missing an essential component. I have adopted use of texture and white paint along the lines she recommends, and feel my resources much enriched. A remarkable book. The printing is excellent, as needed to show the fine detail and richness of color her techniques deliver. This book makes a substantial contribution to watercolor technique.

Lovely paintings, but instruction could be better.

Love Ann Blockley's style. The book has wonderful pianists and she talks about her techniques in general, but no step by step instruction which I would have liked. It's hard to paint as loosely as she does, so it would be better if she'd taken a couple of pieces and shown the stages rather than just finished pieces. I don't know where to start!
