Almost didn't buy this edition, because I had an earlier one, but I am thrilled that I did!

I am really NOT in a position to spend this much money on a book. Especially one that I had the prior edition of! But it's now or never to do something I always wanted to do, see the National Parks. And as an aging geologist, who spent most of my life looking at subsurface data, and being distracted by the usual things like kids, I really don't want to miss out on understanding the geology of the area I am looking at. I really doubted that this edition would be much different than the previous one, but it is really orders of magnitudes nicer in terms of the layout. I didn't want to invest the time learning the geology, only to learn that I was studying outdated material. Now, the sections are color-coded, to make it easier to see the classification that has been used. (Weathering and erosion, Caves and Reefs, Volcanism, etc). All of the stratigraphic columns have been colored, which makes it visually much easier to see and understand them. Cross sections, maps, and headings are also colored. The photos are in color, and now integrated into the text.
To me, the text is very readable. I have a huge geological dictionary, but really appreciate the fact that there is a glossary of terms for those things I don't quite remember. In fact, the text is great for teaching about different geologic environments. For example, reef development. Naturally my new PC has no CD drive, so I have yet to see the photos included. I do wish a more durable, removable case for the CD was included, because it will surely get damaged if left in the book. I have an entire wall of geology and geophysics books. But this has become hands down my favorite one!

Great New Edition!

Had an earlier version of this while in college. It is a much improved edition. Love the color photos..haven't had a chance to check out the DVD yet!
