The Vet You Don't Want To Avoid!
By Mary Mercedes
Greg Martinez, D.V.M. is a rare treasure.

I appreciate his authentic compassion for his furry patients, savor his wit and humor, and subscribe to his YouTube channel. His informative and upbeat videos both educate and amuse. His message on home-feeding is priceless and much needed in our over-commercialized world.

I'm rating it five stars because I just love this guy and his mission to promote good pet health by feeding natural, wholesome foods. The same way we should be feeding ourselves.

Of particular importance to cat owners are the lengthy explanations and suggestions (based on personal experience with his own cats) on how to transition finicky cats to home-made food.

There's also plenty of special feeding info for allergic or obese dogs, and those with pancreatitis or diabetes.

It's not rocket science. It's easier to start than you might think.

Get your pets off of corn-based dog food. You can buy grain-free, dry commercial food and soak it before feeding with your home-prepared (wet) meat, veggie, rice mix and watch your dog/s thrive. Easy to prepare once a week, as per his instructions.

Dr. Greg explains in detail how to progress to feeding 100% home-made ingredients from there.

And your pets will benefit greatly even if you just want to supplement part of their diet with home-made meals.

I don't own a crock pot but feed my two giant breed dogs (100 and 145 lbs.) mostly home-prepared meals. Some raw meats, eggs and bones... and some cooked meals that I make periodically and freeze in portion sizes. I do have a powerful Vitamix which does short work of grinding up a whole cooked chicken, bones and all in just seconds. Since adding green cooked veggies to the mix, my dogs are not seeking out and eating (then vomiting up) green grass anymore.

This Kindle book discusses both raw meats and bones, and cooked meat/rice/veggie mixes.

I try to make sure that my dogs enjoy raw meat as their entire dinner a couple times a week, or when I can get meats and liver on sale, and I've seen a huge difference in their mental and physical health. My largest dog will consume many raw chicken thighs in a few crunching bites. Only rule here is I feed raw food outdoors only, watch to make sure the meat is consumed immediately (and not buried for later) then spray the counter and sink with Clorox wiped with disposable paper towels for clean-up. NEVER use a sponge or dish cloth when handling raw meats and especially chicken.

In my experience, even the smallest dog can learn to cherish and flourish on healthful, occasional raw-meat meals when the meat/bones are cut to a size they can manage.

My only disappointment with this book was the purchase price which is a bit too high for a digital issue of its size. Also, a table of contents would have been an improvement.

Those of us familiar with farming, ranching, animals, and nutrition might not find much new here. But I highly recommend this book as a starting point for all beginners.

There are no set rules, just guidelines, as Dr. Greg clearly spells out in this volume. If you're looking for a detailed list of weighed and measured ingredients with lengthy collections of recipes, you might be disappointed. But really, this volume has all you need to know to get started.

Mix this book with a little common sense and a relaxed attitude and you have the perfect recipe for success.

Dr. Greg is clearly nothing if not a genuine, straight-shooting kind of guy.

The funniest part of the book is Dr. Gregg's discussion of crock pots. He does a lot of cooking in his garage and says, "It is always good to have an extra in case you crack, burn, or drop and break a pot." Ha. Advice only a man could give!

I can't recall how many quite well-meaning (but misguided and brain-washed) veterinarians I've known through the years who have been mortified by the idea of feeding raw meat, bones, and home-cooked meals this way. Just DON'T listen. Try this book instead and feed your pet to avoid the vet!

Love you Dr. Greg. Keep up the great work and keep cooking.

Common Sense Genius -- Safe and Easy!
By Readin' & Writin'
I loved this book -- true, it's not exactly professional quality layout, but I couldn't have cared less. I'd spent far more on a different book by another vet that was essentially nothing more than a pitch for brand name supplements and a few recipes so complicated it made me wish I'd gotten a goldfish instead of a dog!

This book gave me the reassurance I needed in terms of knowing what to be sure I included in my dog's meals, and the guidance of a vet who makes properly feeding my dog as simple as his diet in the wild would have been. And it's true this book isn't full of recipes, either -- the fact that you don't need to have those lame cookie-cutter recipes is his whole point! He tells you what dogs need, and then you decide whatever you want to use within those guidelines. Such a relief!

The book is a snap (even fun) to read and showed me the EASY way to feed my dog truly healthy meals -- without the expensive supplementation song and dance, or overthinking and overworking myself until I regretted ever getting into this. Thank you, Dr. Martinez!
